Civil Engineer Trainee

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position will prepare for a Civil Engineer position by completing a 12-month civil engineering training program.  The work performed during this training period will develop practical proficiency in the use of engineering knowledge, skills, and abilities in a bridge engineering, transportation engineering, and/or soils engineering environment.  This position could be permanently assigned in either Design, Construction or Maintenance.

The Civil Engineer Trainee attends and actively participates in all assigned phases and rotations as designated in the Civil Engineer Training program.  Rotations include assignments at the District Office, Field Operations, and possibly Central Office in Harrisburg.

This employee performs civil engineering assignments to develop engineering skills and to achieve working knowledge of all phases of PennDOT operations.  These assignments will include conducting preliminary engineering studies, analyzing field conditions, inspecting construction and maintenance projects, drafting geo-technical reports, preparing or reviewing designs for highway or bridge projects, conducting bridge safety inspections, analyzing traffic patterns, preparing recommendations to address traffic safety issues, conducting the testing of materials, and assisting in other related duties as required for the training phase.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

Full-time employment.
Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in King of Prussia. 
Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

Four years of civil engineering experience, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or
A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, or in a closely related field, which includes or was supplemented by major course work in civil engineering; or
An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes possession of an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.
Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
Conditions of Employment: 
This position also requires possession of a valid driver's license which is not under suspension.
Other Requirements:
PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
