Technology Transfer Internship Position

About Our Office
The Technology Transfer Office (TTO) within the Office of Economic Innovation and Partnerships (OEIP) is responsible for commercializing the intellectual property assets of the University of Delaware. 

Time Commitment 
At least 10 hours per week during the academic year with the ability to work more hours in the summer and winter terms (maximum of 20 hours). 

About the Technology Transfer Internship Position
This internship offers the opportunity to gain experience in the field of technology transfer, including the patent process, marketing, and operations. Interns will work on tasks in the following four areas:
  • Research: 
  • Read and understand invention disclosures (and other materials) submitted by faculty members. Discern the difference between the confidential and non-confidential data.
  • Perform an initial commercial assessment by searching for existing intellectual property already on the market.
  • Marketing: 
  • Summarize inventions by creating one-page marketing sheets that explain the background, key benefits, and uses for each invention for prospective licensees.
  • Prepare a company contact list for each invention that contains key licensing personnel at companies and their contact information. 
  • Outreach:
  • Contact companies that were identified in the company contact list via email.
  • Post descriptions of inventions on our marketing platforms (In-Part and Flintbox).
  • Operations:
  • Assist staff with extracting data from system for case manager inquiries. 
  • Report on progress and marketing insights to supervisor on a bi-weekly basis.

  • Special projects may also be assigned by case managers, as needed.

Required Skills
  • A background in business or a technical discipline (science, engineering, etc.) with an interest in intellectual property, technology commercialization, and marketing.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently, act as a self-starter, and be action oriented. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and professional written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
